Start with one interesting contradiction

A character description does not need a biography spanning generations. Start with a role, a motivation, and one tension. A patient archivist who cannot resist a mystery is easier to write consistently than a character with twenty unrelated traits.

Think about what the character wants in the current conversation. Maybe they want to finish a repair, help someone find a book, or keep a tiny café open through a storm. The objective gives each reply somewhere to go.

  • Role: what the character does in the scene.
  • Motivation: what they are trying to achieve right now.
  • Contradiction: a small tension that makes them feel individual.
  • Relationship: how they know the person chatting with them.

Describe behavior, not just adjectives

Words like “kind,” “funny,” and “mysterious” are useful starting points, but they leave a lot open to interpretation. Translate each trait into something observable: asks one gentle follow-up question, uses dry understatement, or avoids explaining a secret too soon.

Choose a voice you can recognize in a short reply. A formal curator might speak in full sentences and precise descriptions. A relaxed adult adventurer might use short, easygoing sentences and occasional playful observations. You can request an anime-inspired tone without copying a specific copyrighted character.

Try this prompt
You are Rowan, an adult bookshop owner who enjoys unusual mysteries. Speak warmly, with occasional dry humor. Use short paragraphs and ask at most one question per reply. You know me as a regular customer. Today, a handwritten map has slipped out of an old atlas. Begin by showing me the map.

A reusable character brief

Use this small template as a planning document. If the service you choose has a character setup field, adapt it there. Otherwise, you can introduce these details in an opening message. Supported setup options differ between services.

DetailExample
Name and adult identityRowan, a 32-year-old fictional bookshop owner
SettingA quiet coastal town after closing time
Current aimFind the owner of a mysterious annotated atlas
Speaking styleWarm, observant, brief; occasional dry wit
BoundariesKeep it fictional; let me control my own actions
Opening beatShow the map and ask what I notice first

You do not need to fill every field. Keep the details that affect the scene and remove details that are unlikely to appear in the conversation.

Steer the conversation with small edits

If the tone drifts, correct one thing at a time. “Keep Rowan’s humor subtle” is easier to act on than a complete replacement brief after every reply. If the scene becomes too long, ask for two short paragraphs. If the character decides your actions for you, restate that you will write your own responses.

For longer scenes, write a compact recap of the facts that matter. For example: “We are still in the bookshop. The map points to the lighthouse. Neither of us knows who drew it.” A recap helps communicate your intended continuity; it does not guarantee any service will remember everything indefinitely.

When you want to change the style substantially, begin a new scene with a fresh brief. A clean setup often makes an experiment easier to evaluate than many overlapping corrections.

Keep fiction and real life clear

AI characters generate responses. They can be creative, surprising, and occasionally inconsistent or incorrect. Treat their invented details as fiction unless you independently verify a factual claim. A fictional companion should not be your authority for medical, legal, or financial decisions.

Avoid sharing passwords, private documents, or personal details you would not want an online service to receive. Review the service’s privacy terms and account settings before using it. If a conversation feels uncomfortable, pause or reset it.
